SEO for Cleaners: Getting Your Google Business Profile Right
SEO for cleaners tends to start in the wrong place. People rebuild the website, add a blog, chase backlinks, and leave the Google Business Profile exactly as it was set up years ago. For a local cleaning business that order is backwards. Your profile decides whether you appear in Google Maps and the local pack at all, and one field inside it does most of the heavy lifting. That field is your primary category, and most cleaners chose it in about four seconds.
Why the primary category outranks everything else in the profile
Google Business Profile lets you set one primary category and up to nine additional ones. Google treats the primary as a statement of what the business fundamentally is, and it carries noticeably more ranking weight than the secondaries. The secondary categories widen the range of searches you are eligible for. The primary decides which searches you can realistically compete in.
This matters more for cleaning than for most trades, because the category list is unusually detailed. Cleaning service, House cleaning service, Commercial cleaning service, Office cleaning service, Carpet cleaning service, Window cleaning service and Janitorial service all exist as separate entries. They are not interchangeable. A cleaner whose primary category reads House cleaning service is telling Google that domestic work is the core of the business, which is correct if it is, and quietly expensive if two thirds of your income comes from offices.
SEO for cleaners starts with choosing the primary category
The rule that holds up in practice is simple. Pick the category that matches the work you want more of, limited to what you can genuinely deliver and evidence. Not the broadest option, and not a summary of everything you are capable of.
The temptation is to choose Cleaning service because it covers the lot. That instinct usually costs you. A broad category drops you into a larger and vaguer pool, competing against every kind of cleaning business in your area for queries that may not be the ones you want. A specific primary tied to your highest value service tends to produce fewer impressions and better bookings. For most cleaners that is the right trade, because the alternative is an inbox full of low margin work.
What the secondary categories are for
Secondaries broaden your eligibility without diluting the primary signal, so there is no reason to leave the slots empty. A cleaner focused on offices might run Commercial cleaning service as primary, with Office cleaning service, Janitorial service, Carpet cleaning service and Window cleaning service behind it. A domestic specialist might lead with House cleaning service and add end of tenancy and carpet options underneath.
The restraint worth keeping is not to list services you do not actually offer. It breaches Google guidelines, and it generates enquiries you have to turn down. Declining work you advertised is a reliable way to collect a one star review from somebody who was never a customer.
The three mistakes that cost the most bookings
The first is a legacy category. The business started doing domestic cleans, grew into commercial contracts, and nobody revisited the profile. The listing still describes a business that stopped existing three years ago.
The second is category churn. Changing your primary every few weeks to chase rankings removes the consistency Google needs to settle your relevance, and usually leaves you worse off than either choice on its own. Change it once, deliberately, then leave it alone for six to eight weeks before judging anything.
The third is an incomplete services list underneath the category. The category gets you into the right race. The individual services you list, things like end of tenancy cleaning, communal area cleaning or oven cleaning, are what connect specific searches to your listing. A profile carrying nothing but a category name is competing on proximity and reviews alone.
Categories are necessary, not sufficient
Getting the category right makes you eligible for the correct searches. It does not by itself put you above a competitor with four hundred more reviews. Proximity, prominence and relevance all still apply. Your citations on Checkatrade, Yell and the trade directories still need to carry the same business name and phone number as the profile, and trust signals like DBS checked staff still belong on the site itself. What the category does is decide which race you have entered.
It is still the cheapest fix available and the one to make before spending on anything else. If your current setup does not match the work you want, it is one of the first things we check on a cleaning company profile, and one of the few changes that can move which queries you show for inside a month. The rest of the profile work, covering services, service areas, attributes and photos, sits on top of it and is covered under Google Business Profile optimisation.
A ten minute job worth doing today
Open your profile. Read the primary category out loud, then say what actually pays your invoices. If those two sentences do not match, you have found the cheapest ranking problem you will fix this year. Fix it once, fill in your services properly underneath, and leave it to settle.
